AUGUSTA - The Maine House of Representatives unanimously voted to enact a proposal on Thursday sponsored by Rep. Tavis Hasenfus, D-Readfield, to expand the list of persons exempt from the real estate transfer tax.
"Expanding this exemption will bring equity to blended families and extended family units," said Hasenfus. "This will better implement the existing policy of intra-family real estate transactions."
Currently, Maine law allows for an exemption to the real estate transfer tax for deeds between spouses, between parents and children and between grandparents and grandchildren. As amended, LD 210 expands the exemption to include siblings, stepsiblings, stepchildren and stepgrandchildren.
The bill faces further votes in the Senate before heading to the governor's desk.
Hasenfus, who represents Readfield and Winthrop, is serving his second term in the Maine House. He is a member of the Taxation Committee and the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee.
