As we move into the fall season, there have been two issues I have been hearing more about from constituents: winter heating costs and back-to-school safety. 

The cost of keeping your home warm during the winter, particularly for those with fixed incomes, can be a major financial burden. While recent actions from the federal government have created funding instability, there are fortunately still resources available to help folks afford to heat their homes.

September is Suicide Prevention Month

Each September, we are reminded that suicide is not just a personal tragedy. It is a public health crisis that touches every part of life in Maine. It’s a time to remember those we've lost, support those who are struggling and recommit ourselves to the work of prevention.

I’ve had the opportunity to serve in the Maine Legislature for more than 20 years, and throughout that time, I’ve witnessed many different state budget negotiations. Until this year, though, I’ve never had first-hand experience with those negotiations. Now, as a member of the Appropriations and Financial Affairs (AFA) Committee, which is responsible for crafting and reviewing the budget line by line, I believe without hesitation that we passed the best possible budget for the people of Maine in June.  

Building a Better Future

AUGUSTA – On Tuesday, Sen. Henry Ingwersen, D-Arundel, House Assistant Majority Leader Rep. Lori Gramlich, D-Old Orchard Beach, and Rep. Bill Pluecker, I-Warren, met at the State House with a visiting delegation of lawmakers and officials from Massachusetts to discuss Maine’s efforts to combat PFAS contamination in the state.

AUGUSTA – Maine State Representative Chris Kessler is urging all Mainers who have canceled their Spectrum internet service in the past year to carefully review their final bill to make sure they are charged only for the days of actual service provided in their last month of billing.

Augusta – A measure sponsored by Rep. Tavis Hasenfus, D-Readfield, to reimburse municipalities for General Assistance paid for the housing of residents of recovery residences was signed into law by Gov. Janet Mills on July 1.
