Brunswick lawmakers honor retiring town councilors

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Brunswick’s state representatives recognized outgoing town councilors Sande Updegraph and W. David Watson at a Brunswick Town Council meeting on Monday.

“I am so grateful for both Council Chair Updegraph and Councilor Watson. They are trusted, skilled and respected colleagues and true champions of the people. During their time in public service, they have found ways to engage with others effectively, thoughtfully – to understand and lead with compassion and success,” said Rep. Poppy Arford, D-Brunswick.

Arford sponsored a legislative sentiment recognizing Updegraph, who represents District 4 and chairs the Brunswick Town Council. Updegraph is retiring after 25 years in various public service roles, including two terms on the town council. She previously served on Brunswick’s Planning Board, the Comprehensive Plan Committee and as the economic development director in Freeport.

Rep. Cheryl Golek, D-Harpswell, sponsored a legislative sentiment recognizing Watson, who represents District 1. He is retiring after 23 years on the Brunswick Town Council. Prior to serving on the town council, he served the community as a police officer for 35 years.

“Council Chair Updegraph and Councilor Watson exemplify what it means to be true public servants. For decades, they have dedicated themselves to our community, whether serving on the council or in other civic roles, demonstrating an extraordinary commitment to the people of Brunswick. Their years of service deserve our deepest gratitude,” said Golek.

Arford, Golek and Rep. Dan Ankeles, D-Brunswick, all spoke at Monday’s council meeting, thanking both Updegraph and Watson for their exceptional service to the Brunswick community.

“Dave Watson has had Brunswick’s back his entire life, whether as law enforcement, American Legion Commander or longtime member of our town council,” said Ankeles. “I am proud to count Sande Updegraph as a good friend and appreciate her as one of the brightest policy minds in our community.”

Arford is serving her third term in the Maine House, representing District 101 in Brunswick.

Ankeles is serving his second term in the Maine House, representing District 100 in Brunswick.

Golek is serving her second term in the Maine House, representing Harpswell and part of Brunswick.
