December Programs for Job Seekers at the Augusta CareerCenter

AUGUSTA--Maine CareerCenters bring job seekers and employers together. For those who are looking to make a change in careers or get a new job, the Augusta CareerCenter is offering a variety of programs for job seekers in December.

"For the past eight years I have worked to make Mainers more prosperous," stated Governor Paul R. LePage. "A new or better job is a key part of that goal. If you want a job with better pay or benefits, a better commute, or more opportunity to advance your career, contact your local CareerCenter. They can help you find a new job, prepare your resume and practice for that interview, and connect you with training. You may even qualify for a free training program. I wish all Mainers success in their careers, and remember that Maine needs everyone who can work to work to help our economy grow."

Unless otherwise noted, all workshops and events are held at the Augusta CareerCenter, co-located with Maine Department of Labor at 45 Commerce Drive, Augusta. To register for sessions held at the Augusta CareerCenter, call 624-5120. Space is limited, sign-up early to reserve your spot.

Computer Basics: Wednesday, December 5, 9 a.m. to 12 noon

This course is designed for the novice user and will cover the basics to get you "up and running" with your job search. Introduction to the "basics" of computers and typing a document using Microsoft Word, registering and understanding the Maine Job Link website. Workshop is one-on-one. Sign-up early to reserve your spot.

Interview Skills: Wednesday, December 19, 9 a.m. to 12 noon

Gain the confidence needed to ace that interview and get the job! Go in thoroughly prepared and positive you are the applicant the employer needs! Interviewing Skills & Techniques Workshop covers communication techniques, before-the-interview research, attitude and appearance, examples of questions you may be asked, what you can ask the employer, post interview follow-up, and more. Discuss all the "do's and don'ts" and what to expect during the process. Workshop limited to six. Sign-up early to reserve your spot.

Resume Writing: Thursday, December 13, 1 to 4 p.m.

This workshop covers completing job applications, the importance of cover letters, resume content and formatting, resume writing using computer software programs, and much more. Learn why having a great resume is so important in today's job market. A well-written resume can get your foot in the door, and the interview - the next step to employment. Workshop limited to six.

CareerCenter at Educare and the Waterville Public Library, Tuesday, December 11

These two-hour, hands-on workshops will provide assistance with learning more about training money available, signing up for Maine JobLink, searching for jobs, working on resumes, and applying for jobs. Will also discuss various resources found at your local CareerCenter, including Maine JobLink, the Competitive Skills Scholarship Program, Vocational Rehabilitation, Youth Employment and the Steps to Success, as well as addressing eligibility requirements associated with some of these programs.

If you are or know someone who could use assistance in help in paying for training, preparing for, seeking, securing, and/or maintaining employment please come to these valuable sessions, held every other Tuesday of the month, unless otherwise noted, at Educare, 56 Drummond Ave., Waterville, from 8 to 9:45 a.m., and the Waterville Public Library, 73 Elm St., 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Learn how the Maine Department of Labor CareerCenters help those seeking employment and training. These sessions are drop-in classes, no sign up required.

CareerCenters, part of the Maine Department of Labor, offer a variety of services to help people find employment or upgrade skills. Each center provides several public-access computer workstations with Microsoft Office software, resume writing and cover letter software, Internet access and O'Net software for skills assessment.
