Transition Program Helps Veterans Reenter Civilian Life

Career decisions can be difficult for service members leaving the military. In 2008, Maine CareerCenter Veterans? Representatives Larz Nelson and Jerry Smith were part of a team that helped hundreds of new veterans get started on their civilian job search through the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) workshops offered at Brunswick Naval Air Station.

Eleven four-day programs were offered last year providing information on job search options, career decision-making, current occupational and labor market conditions, resume and cover letter preparation and interviewing techniques.

Every participant receives an evaluation of their employability in the labor market and information on other veterans? benefits. TAP is a partnership of the Departments of Defense, Veterans Affairs, and Transportation and the Department of Labor?s Veterans Employment and Training Service (VETS) to give employment and training information to service members within 180 days of separation or retirement.
