Special services for veterans and military personnel

BRUNSWICK? On Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, the Southern Midcoast CareerCenter in partnership with the Southern Midcoast Maine Chamber is holding a ?Hiring Maine?s Heroes? Job and Resource Fair at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 2 Columbus Dr. in Brunswick. While this event provides special services for local veterans and their families, the fair is open to anybody seeking employment.

Three, one-hour ?mini-workshops? on resume writing (at 11 a.m.), interviewing (at noon) and transition assistance for recently separated veterans (at 1 p.m.) will also be held on-site. Job seekers should register for workshops by visiting the Chamber website at http://www.midcoastmaine.com or calling the Chamber at 725-8797.

?Our current and former military personnel have incredible skills they can offer Maine businesses,? said Governor Paul R. LePage. ?This job fair is an excellent opportunity for businesses in the Bath-Brunswick area to hire a talented person while thanking him or her for serving our country with honor.?

More than forty employers are participating, including Adecco, Bank of America, Community Health and Counseling, Lowe?s, Molnlycke Health Care, Naval Sea Systems Command, U.S. Postal Service and the University of Southern Maine. Several veterans? services agencies are also participating.

Attendees should bring a resume and, more important, should be prepared to have an ?interview-like? conversation with employers to discuss skills, knowledge areas and abilities. Job seekers should also be dressed for an interview.

CareerCenters, part of the Maine Department of Labor, offer specialized employment and training services for veterans. If you served in the U.S. Armed Forces a CareerCenter Veterans' Representative can help you find a job, get new skills, or access other state or federal resources available to Veterans. Veterans and eligible spouses are given priority for employment, training and placement services provided under most Maine Department of Labor-funded programs. All CareerCenter services are free of charge.

The Southern Midcoast CareerCenter, located at 275 Bath Road in Brunswick, is open 8 a.m.to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and can be reached at 207-373-4000 or 1-888-836-3355 (TTY users should dial Maine Relay 711). You can also find more information at the CareerCenter website, http://www.mainecareercenter.com. Maine CareerCenters are an equal opportunity provider. Auxiliary aids and services are available upon request to individuals with disabilities.
