Maine's Best Older Worker Employers Recognized Bookmark and Share

September 28, 2007

Augusta- In celebration of National Older Worker Week, nine Maine employers were recognized today by the Maine Jobs Council as model employers of older workers. A representative from each employer was on hand to accept the Maine Job Council ?Silver Collar Employer? award.

The award is given to employers in Maine whose policies and practices match the needs of mature employees, capturing their skills and experience, strong work ethic, flexibility and enthusiasm. Each Silver Collar Employer, whether large or small, has a demonstrated commitment to a diverse and vibrant workforce and support of its community.

A recent Census survey noted that the share of older workers in Maine?s workforce is growing. Approximately 15 percent of the Maine workforce is currently over the age of 55, and during the period between 2001 and 2004 all Maine counties experienced an increase in older workers. Growth was highest in the coastal counties of Lincoln, Knox, Waldo, and Hancock, where the number of workers 55 and older increased by 23 percent or more.

?Successful businesses recognize that experienced, motivated employees are a key to their success,? said Maine Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman. ?Silver collar employees recognize and benefit from the qualities older workers bring to their jobs.?
