The Maine Atlas represents a collaborative endeavor made possible through the contributions, expertise, and sustained commitment of many individuals and organizations united by a shared dedication to documenting and celebrating the state of Maine.
We are grateful to our funding partner the Maine Office of Tourism, whose financial support has enabled the development of this public resource as part of Maine's commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Their investment in accessible, high-quality geographic and historical information represents a meaningful contribution to the people of Maine.
We extend our sincere gratitude to our partner organizations — including state agencies, historical societies, tribal nations, libraries, museums, and conservation groups — whose data, resources, and institutional knowledge form the foundation of this project. Their willingness to collaborate and share information has made this atlas a resource of breadth and depth that no single organization could achieve independently.
We recognize our data and content contributors, who have generously donated their time and professional expertise to gather, verify, and curate the information presented throughout these pages. The accuracy and richness of this atlas is a direct reflection of their diligence.
We also acknowledge the communities across Maine — from Kittery to Fort Kent, from the coastline to the North Woods — whose local knowledge, historical perspective, and ongoing engagement have ensured that this atlas remains grounded in the lived experience of the state it represents..
