House Democrats introduce legislation to further protect access to abortion care

AUGUSTA - Today, House Democrats unveiled three pieces of legislation aimed at continuing to increase protections for accessing abortion care in Maine.

Together, the measures would strengthen safeguards for Maine's health care providers, ensure that every Mainer has the same rights to abortion care regardless of where they live and expand access so those who choose to exercise their right to an abortion can get the care they need.

Pringle named to Legislature's Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services Committee

AUGUSTA - Rep. Jane Pringle, D-Windham, will serve as a member of the Legislature's Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services Committee in the 131st Maine Legislature.

"As a retired physician, I devoted my career to working hard to provide the best care and advocacy for my patients," said Pringle. "I was pleased to learn that I was appointed to the Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services Committee, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to move forward bipartisan legislation that improves health outcomes and lowers the cost of health care."

Gattine appointed to Legislature's Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee and Joint Select Committee on Housing

AUGUSTA - Rep. Drew Gattine, D-Westbrook, was appointed by House Speaker Rachel Talbot Ross to serve as a member of the Legislature's Joint Standing Committee on Appropriations and Financial Affairs as well as the newly-formed Joint Select Committee on Housing.

Millett named 2023 Maternal and Child Health Fellow

AUGUSTA - Rep. Rebecca Millett, D-Cape Elizabeth, has been named a 2023 Maternal and Child Health Fellow, a program by the National Conference of State Legislatures that supports state legislative leaders in child and maternal health policy from across the country.

Millett, a longtime member of the Legislature's Education and Cultural Affairs Committee, will engage with other legislative leaders and policy experts, build knowledge about new research and work to identify steps for immediate action in Maine.

Mastraccio appointed to Legislature's Government Oversight and Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services Committees

AUGUSTA - Rep. Anne-Marie Mastraccio, D-Sanford, will serve as a member of the Legislature's Government Oversight Committee (GOC) and the Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services (HCIFS) Committee. Having previously served as a member of the HCIFS Committee and as House chair of GOC, Mastraccio was appointed by Speaker Rachel Talbot Ross to serve on them again in the 131st Legislature.

Montell appointed to Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee

AUGUSTA - Rep. Karen Montell, D-Gardiner, will serve on the Legislature's Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee.

"I'm excited to get started on the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee," said Montell. "This committees work is crucial to ensuring fairness in our state's liquor and cannabis policies, protecting voting rights and supporting Maine's veterans. I am looking forward to working with my colleagues on this committee to better the lives of all Mainers."

Lajoie appointed to Legislature's Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee

AUGUSTA - Rep. Michel Lajoie, D-Lewiston, will serve as a member of the Legislature's Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee.

Lajoie, who previously served in the Maine House of Representatives for four terms, was appointed to the committee by House Speaker Rachel Talbot Ross. The committee oversees the Department of Corrections and the Department of Public Safety as well as policy related to Maines criminal law and procedures.
