AUGUSTA – Rep. Holly Eaton, D-Deer Isle, has been appointed to the Surface Water Ambient Toxics (SWAT) Advisory Group. She was appointed by House Speaker Ryan Fecteau, D-Biddeford, as one of two legislators to serve on the advisory group.
“Talking about the importance of clean waters shouldn’t just be a slogan to bolster tourism. Our fishing industries and the coastal communities that depend on them rely on clean waters to survive,” said Eaton. “The state has an important role to play in protecting Maine waters from toxic contaminants. I’m honored to join this important work and help safeguard this critical natural resource for current and future generations.”
The SWAT monitoring program was established in 1993. Its goal is to determine the nature, scope and severity of toxic contamination in the surface waters and fisheries of the state. SWAT monitors tissue, sediment and the water column in all waters of the state, as well as the health of organisms that may indicate toxic conditions. The program collects data to understand the risks to human and environmental health posed by toxic contaminants.
The advisory group reviews the Department of Environmental Protection's annual and five-year work plans. The group consists of 12 individuals, including two legislators and two representatives with scientific backgrounds representing each of five following interests: business, municipal, conservation, public health and academic.
Eaton is serving her second term in the Maine House and represents the communities of Brooklin, Deer Isle, Eagle Island Township, Frenchboro, Southwest Harbor, Stonington, Swan’s Island, Tremont, Isle au Haut and Vinalhaven. She serves as a member of the Marine Resources Committee and the Transportation Committee.
