AUGUSTA - The Legislature's Health and Human Services Committee voted unanimously Wednesday to advance legislation sponsored by Rep. Michele Meyer, D-Eliot, that would increase the monthly benefit level provided by the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, which would support greater financial security for Maines low-income families.
Currently, one in eight Maine children live in deep poverty, which results in food insecurity and developmental challenges. Studies show that childhood poverty also has long-term consequences not only for children themselves, but for the communities they live in. TANF is an essential program that provides monthly cash assistance as well as employment and training support services to vulnerable families.
"This measure would help Maines most vulnerable families move beyond mere survival," said Meyer. "Providing resources and opportunities through a bolstered TANF program will empower parents to foster environments of safety, stability and joy for both themselves and their children."
According to data compiled by the Center on Budget and Policy, Maine provides New England's lowest TANF grant level. Currently, an eligible family of three in Maine can receive a monthly benefit of $723, while neighboring states like New Hampshire offer up to $1,243 a month. LD 1877 would raise Maines TANF benefit level by 20%, bringing it more in line with the assistance provided by other states in the region.
"Modernizing Maine's TANF program, bringing it in line with other states' approaches and current economic conditions, will ensure families have opportunities to meet their needs (including access to healthcare), strengthen our communities, and support our state's workforce goals," said Hannah Hudson, director of policy at Maine's Primary Care Association.
The bill faces votes in the House and Senate in the upcoming weeks.
Rep. Meyer is the House chair of the Health and Human Services Committee and is serving her third term in the Maine House. She represents District 150, which includes Eliot and parts of Kittery and South Berwick.
