Governor Janet Mills has ordered that the United States and State of Maine flags be lowered to half-staff statewide from sunrise until sunset on Saturday, October 25, 2025 in remembrance of the victims and to honor the survivors of the tragedy in Lewiston. Tomorrow marks two years since the shootings at Just-In-Time Recreation and Schemengees Bar and Grille in Lewiston that took the lives of eighteen people and injured many others.

The Governor issued the following statement:

Consistent with a directive of the President, Governor Janet Mills has ordered that the United States and the State of Maine flags be lowered to half-staff until sunset on August 31, 2025.

Consistent with a directive of the President, Governor Janet Mills has ordered that the United States and the State of Maine flags be lowered to half-staff statewide from 12:01 a.m. to noon on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, 2025 in honor and recognition of America's fallen service members.

In accordance with a directive from the President, Governor Mills has ordered that the United States and State of Maine flags be lowered to half-staff statewide tomorrow, Thursday, May 15, 2025 in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day. The annual observance, during National Police Week, honors local, state, and federal law enforcement officials who gave their lives in the line of duty. Yesterday, Governor Mills paid tribute to Maine's fallen law enforcement officers at the annual Maine Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Observance in Augusta.

In accordance with a directive from the President, Governor Mills has ordered that the United States and State of Maine flags be lowered to half-staff statewide this Sunday, May 4, 2025 in honor of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service. The annual service honoring firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year will take place on Sunday in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

In accordance with a directive of the President, Governor Janet Mills has ordered that the United States and State of Maine flags be lowered to half-staff statewide in honor of His Holiness Pope Francis, who passed away this morning at the age of 88. Per the President's proclamation, the flags are to be flown at half-staff until sunset on the day of internment.

Flags to remain lowered until January 28, 2025

In accordance with a directive of President Biden, Governor Janet Mills has ordered that the United States and State of Maine flags be lowered to half-staff statewide in honor of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 100. Per the President's proclamation and pursuant to U.S. Code (4 U.S.C. 7m), the flags are to be flown at half-staff for a period of 30 days from the death of the former president and are to be returned to full staff at sunset on Tuesday, January 28, 2025.

One year after the shootings, Governor Mills reminds Maine people that, "we are not alone, that we are 'Lewiston Strong', and that we will continue to heal, together."

Funeral Services for Former Governor will be held tomorrow in Portland

Governor Janet Mills has ordered that the United States and State of Maine flags be lowered to half-staff statewide tomorrow, Friday April 19, in honor of former Maine Governor Joseph E. “Joe” Brennan. Governor Brennan will be laid to rest following a funeral service tomorrow at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland.

Flags should be lowered beginning on Saturday, November 25

In accordance with a directive of the President, Governor Janet Mills has ordered that the United States and State of Maine flags be lowered to half-staff statewide in honor of the late former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 96. Consistent with the President’s directive, flags should be lowered this Saturday, November 25, and remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of Mrs. Carter’s interment, Wednesday, November 29.

Governor orders that flags remain lowered statewide for the next 18 days in honor of the 18 victims who lost their lives

Governor Janet Mills today provided a comprehensive update on her Administration’s ongoing efforts to provide direct support to Maine people and communities impacted by last week’s mass shooting in Lewiston.

During an afternoon press conference at the Maine State House, the Governor detailed how her Administration is working in close coordination with Federal and local governments to provide resources to those impacted by last week’s tragedy.

Governor Janet Mills issued the following statement today on the death of Hancock County Sheriff Deputy Luke Gross who was struck and killed by a motor vehicle Thursday morning while investigating a call for a vehicle off the road on Route 3 in Trenton:
