Member Duties: Recruit students to staff EM3C & conduct outreach to students/staff about food insecurity and provide them resources to combat hunger. This includes culturally appropriate food to meet the needs of EMCC's increasing international population. Also, the VISTA will write grants to procure additional resources. Increase efficiencies/communications regarding curbside pickup, walk-in service, & food deliveries is also critical. This includes revamping the way students place orders & staff track them. Increasing traffic to the location of EM3C is also critical. The other key objective is to establish a community garden on campus. This objective will require collaboration with existing technical programs at EMCC. Member Spotlights

Grace Romania

Communications VISTA, Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, Forestry

Photo of Grace Romania

Highlights of Service: "I’ve done a lot of important, essential work during my time here, and it’s hard to pick just one or two highlights. One of my more exciting endeavors was in organizing a virtual farmer panel for the January state of Maine Agricultural Trades Show. The panel featured a Maine Senior FarmShare farmer, a Maine Harvest Bucks farmer, a Mainers Feeding Mainers farmer, as well as a farmer who allows gleaning. I got to reach out to farmers to represent each facet of the panel, and then troubleshoot a lot of tech. The panel ran virtually, and it was a really good conversation about food insecurity and ways everyday farmers can get involved."

Plans After Service: Following the conclusion of my service term with AmeriCorps VISTA, I will begin a full-time position at Maine Farmland Trust (MFT) as a Farmland Protection & Stewardship Administrative Assistant. MFT is a prominent nonprofit in Maine, which works in protecting farmland across the state from development pressures. In this new role, I will be providing vital support to the organization’s land stewardship operations and be working in a variety of capacities – utilizing some of my prior GIS skills, as well as some of the minute-taking and data knowledge I’ve gained during my time at Maine DACF. I’m excited that I get to continue doing important work within the field of agriculture in Maine!"

Bronson Herr

Community Development VISTA, Aroostook County Community Action Program

Photo of Bronson Herr

Highlights of Service: "One of my biggest accomplishments was coming up with funds for our new program, Travelling Totes. In our early care and Head Start programs, we came up with this program which is similar to a backpack program. A little over 200 kids are sent home with totes filled with fresh food, perishable, and non-perishable food on the weekend, so when they are away from ACAP on the weekends, we can send them meals. I personally brought in around $35,000 for this, so it has been a tremendous support. There are resources that we send home with the kids as well. It’s been a great success and is still going strong."

Plans After Service: Bronson's VISTA host site, Aroostook County Action Program (ACAP), offered him a job after his service term ended, which he has since accepted. Congratulations to Bronson and to ACAP!

Molly Copp

Marketing & Outreach VISTA, Maine Women, Infants, & Children Nutrition Program (WIC)

Photo of Molly Copp

Highlights of Service: "My service has impacted communities in Maine by increasing accessibility to Maine-grown fresh fruits and vegetables through our Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program, as well as the promotion of the Cash Value Benefit bump (extra money!) for fruits and vegetables received through the American Rescue Plant Act. I’ve also been able to collaborate with many child-based programs in Maine that WIC provides referrals for, and vice versa, to create a poster that has blanketed the state and put WIC’s name into new environments and populations WIC previously has not conducted outreach to. My efforts and work ultimately have increased referrals to WIC, engagement in the program, and the redemption of fruits, vegetables, and other foods.”

Plans After Service: Molly is interested in continuing to work in the field of public health and nutrition, searching for opportunities with a few months of service remaining.
