Foliage Report for October 21, 2009

Southern Maine Coast, Interior Have Peak Foliage

AUGUSTA, Maine – Coastal and interior sections of southern Maine will display peak fall foliage through the weekend according to the state Department of Conservation’s final fall foliage report of the season.

Forest rangers are observing peak foliage conditions, or at least 75 percent color change, along the southern half of the coast (Zone 1) from Kittery to Penobscot Bay, and in southern interior locations from Fryeburg to Auburn and Augusta (southern Zone 3), the report states. Leaf drop is moderate, between 30 and 50 percent, in the regions.

Rangers at Bradbury Mountain State Park in Pownal and Fort Knox State Historic Site in Prospect are reporting good leaf-peeping conditions. The Penobscot Narrows Observatory at Fort Knox is open daily through Oct. 31.

Foliage color in all other regions of the state is now past peak, although rangers say that there are plenty of leaves to view in the state’s Downeast region (Zone 2), and central locations between Greenville and Bangor (northern Zone 3).

Maine's fall foliage conditions are updated on this site each Wednesday from mid-September through mid-October.
