Effective supervision spans three main areas (Administrative, Educational, and Supportive Supervision) that, while related, are also distinct. Each is an important component or piece of the bigger picture puzzle of child welfare supervision. The supervisor curriculum developed by the Butler Institute is competency-based so that training participants attain the level of proficiency designated by the competencies. Supervisory Training Academy consists of three separate modules. Each module emphasizes self-reflection and application to the unique circumstances of each supervisor. All modules are highly interactive and accommodate a variety of learning styles to maximize the learning experience. This module, Supportive Supervision, focuses on educating workers in order to attain more skillful performance of their tasks. Topic areas within this module are: Supervisor as motivator, In depth and crisis supervision, critical thinking, secondary trauma, burnout prevention, supervisor as team leader, job satisfaction and supervisor as coach.
