Domains

What is a domain name?

A domain name is a customized web address that you can purchase, such as www.mainefoliage.com or www.parksandlands.com. By default (without a domain name), your site's URL will be part of Maine.gov, such as www.maine.gov/dacf/parks/. Domain names at the State of Maine are governed under the following policies:

Options for Domain Name Set Up

A domain name can function in two ways.

  1. Most commonly, state agencies use a domain name as an "alias" or short-cut address for marketing purposes. When the user types in the domain name, the browser displays the appropriate website with the normal www.maine.gov address, so it is clear to the user that they are seeing an official state website. For example, the user types in "www.mainefoliage.com" and is then directed to the site www.maine.gov/dacf/mfs/projects/fall_foliage/index.shtml.
  2. For special programs or campaigns, you may want a virtual domain. This means that the user will never see the www.maine.gov address, but instead will continue to see your custom domain name throughout the website. This option should not be used for primary department, bureau or division sites and must be approved by OIT.

To request a domain name, please follow the instructions in the Waiver Policy (PDF).
