When will go live be?
February 23, 2026, at 8:00 am.
When will I lose access to the current defenderData?
The existing defenderData 5 (dD5), will be offline beginning on February 20, 2026, at 5:00 pm and you will not be able to access your information in dD5 until the new defenderData 7 (dD7) comes on-line on Monday, February 23, 2026, at 8:00 am.
What will happen with my dD5 time entries already entered into the system?
Once dD7 is live, your entries from dD5 will be populated in the new program. The new UTMBS format will only be used on time entries created in dD7. All entries that are imported from dD5 will retain our previous time entry code format.
See UTMBS Codes, including some custom PDS codes.
How can I enter time comments effectively?
Please enter a description that gives sufficient context to support each billing entry. Examples include:
- For communication: (email/call/text/letter) who are you engaging with?
- For motions: what is the title of the motion?
- For discovery review: what materials are you reviewing ie: body camera, witness interview, police reports (please no confidential details about the review)..
- For attending court: what is the event and please note if a plea occurred on that date.
When entering a description, please limit the confidential information that is included.
How does paralegal time get billed?
For paralegals employed by the attorney/law office:
Attorneys and support staff who are employed by them and will be working on PDS cases should have their own unique log-in. Please email pds.apply@maine.gov to create a support staff dD7 account. Time submitted for Paralegal Services or Secretarial Services performed by someone who is an employee of Counsel shall be submitted as a time entry by the Paralegal or Secretary under their own profile in defenderData. When entering time in the system, the user’s role (attorney or paralegal) will determine the billing rate on the voucher.
For paralegals who are contractors of the attorney/law office:
Contractors do not need a unique log-in. Time submitted for Paralegal Services or Secretarial Services performed by someone who is a contractor of Counsel shall be submitted by Counsel as an expense and attached to the relevant voucher in the PDS electronic case management system. Said expense must be accompanied by a receipt reflecting that Counsel paid that amount to the person who performed the Paralegal Services and/or Secretarial Services.
Please refer to Rule 301-B for more specific guidance.
