Rep. Richard A. Evans, M.D. is serving in his first term in the Maine House.  Evans is a decorated veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving as the Hospital Commander at Whiteman AFB, MO and subsequently being appointed as the Medical Group Commander of the 28th Medical Group, Ellsworth AFB, MO. Dr. Evans is self-employed in the solo private practice of general surgery. He serves on the Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services Committee.

Evans attended Howard University in Washington, DC on a scholarship, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology with a minor in Chemistry, then attended Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.  Following completion of his residency, he then entered active military duty with his very first assignment being at Loring AFB in Limestone.

He is a past President of the Maine Medical Association (MMA) and currently serves as Maine’s Senior Delegate to the American Medical Association (AMA). For the past 15 years, Dr. Evans has served as the Moderator of the General Assembly of the MMA in addition to being the Editor of Maine Medicine, a quarterly publication by the MMA. Regionally and nationally, Dr. Evans served as Chair of the New England Delegation to the AMA and as a member of the Steering Committee of the national Organization of State Medical Association Presidents. He was selected by the Speaker of the House of Delegates of the AMA to serve on the AMA Compensation Committee, recently completing this appointment as Chair of the Committee.

Evans recognizes that there are many concerns that need to be addressed in our rural area, from affordable health care, jobs and economic recovery, educational opportunities for our young people, poverty, and food insecurity.

He and his wife Bonny have resided in Dover-Foxcroft for the last seventeen years. Prior to moving to Dover-Foxcroft, Evans practiced general surgery in Machias for ten years. He and Bonny have a blended family of two daughters, one son, eight granddaughters, and one grandson.
