Lawmakers advance Millett proposal to address Maine's housing crisis

AUGUSTA - The Maine Legislature voted Tuesday to advance a proposal from Rep. Rebecca Millett, D-Cape Elizabeth, to address the state's worsening housing crisis. The measure earned initial approval "under the hammer," or by unanimous consent, in both the House and Senate.

LD 1540 would create the Stable Home Fund, a state program to provide low-income families with temporary rental assistance paid directly to their landlords.

Committee advances Millett proposals to address Maine's housing crisis

AUGUSTA - The Legislature's Housing Committee voted Friday to advance two proposals from Rep. Rebecca Millett, D-Cape Elizabeth, that aim to tackle the state's worsening housing crisis.

As amended, the first bill, LD 226, would invest $40 million in affordable housing construction and programs annually over the next five years, adding up to a total investment of $200 million. It received unanimous support from the committee.

Millett proposal would raise wages to address school support staff shortage

AUGUSTA - Rep. Rebecca Millett, D-Cape Elizabeth, presented a bill on Thursday to address the shortage of ed techs and other school staff by raising their wages.

LD 955 would establish a minimum hourly wage for public school support staff beginning in 2024. The wage would be equal to 125% of the statewide minimum wage.

Millett bill seeks to ensure school lockdown drills protect Maine students

AUGUSTA - A bill from Rep. Rebecca Millett, D-Cape Elizabeth, would require the development of best practices to guide Maine schools when carrying out school lockdown drills.

At a public hearing on Tuesday, Millett told members of the Legislature's Education and Cultural Affairs Committee that drills should protect students both physically and emotionally.

Millett named 2023 Maternal and Child Health Fellow

AUGUSTA - Rep. Rebecca Millett, D-Cape Elizabeth, has been named a 2023 Maternal and Child Health Fellow, a program by the National Conference of State Legislatures that supports state legislative leaders in child and maternal health policy from across the country.

Millett, a longtime member of the Legislature's Education and Cultural Affairs Committee, will engage with other legislative leaders and policy experts, build knowledge about new research and work to identify steps for immediate action in Maine.
