Over the six non-consecutive terms that I have spent representing Lewiston in the Maine House of Representatives, I have learned a great deal about the core issues that regularly impact our community – including rising property taxes that are making it difficult for older Mainers to remain in their homes and for young Mainers to purchase their first homes. 

Governor signs Sayre bill to reduce financial barriers for formerly incarcerated Mainers

AUGUSTA — A measure sponsored by Rep. Dan Sayre, D-Kennebunk, aimed at helping incarcerated Mainers build their credit scores before release, was recently signed into law by Gov. Janet Mills.

Working with the Maine Department of Corrections (DOC), Midcoast Federal Credit Union had sought to extend their existing credit-builder loan program to incarcerated people, but came up against a barrier in the law: the principal of the loan was subject to automatic deductions by the DOC, even though recipients would still be required to pay back the full loan amount.
