Committee advances Landry bill to protect Maine firefighters from harmful chemicals

AUGUSTA - The Legislature's Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee voted Wednesday to advance a proposal by Rep. Scott Landry, D-Farmington, to help local fire departments limit firefighters' exposure to harmful chemicals. The vote was unanimous among those present with three committee members absent.

Golek introduces bill to study placing child care facilities in secondary schools

Cheryl Golek, D-Harpswell, presented LD 1520 at a public hearing before the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee on Monday, which would direct the Maine Department of Education and the Maine Department of Health and Human Services to study placing child care facilities in secondary schools.

Greely High School Madrigals perform the national anthem before the Maine House

Rep. Anne Graham, D-North Yarmouth, and Rep. Steve Moriarty, D-Cumberland, welcomed the Greely High School Madrigals and director Sarah Hanson Bailey to the State House on Tuesday. The group performed the national anthem in the chamber of the House of Representatives at the start of the day's session.

Meyer presents measure to bolster direct care workforce by providing tuition vouchers

AUGUSTA - Rep. Michele Meyer, D-Eliot, presented a bill Tuesday to address Maine's essential care worker shortage by providing workers and their families with money for college.

LD 1718 creates the Essential Support Worker Tuition Grant Program, which aims to attract and retain workers by providing tuition vouchers to one of the state's public universities or community colleges. The vouchers could be used by the worker or a member of their immediate family.
