AUGUSTA - A bill sponsored by Rep. Ralph Tucker, D-Brunswick, to reduce the future use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in Maine was signed into law Monday by Gov. Janet Mills.
HFCs are used in air conditioning, refrigeration equipment and insulation and are 100 to 1,000 times more potent as greenhouse gases than CO2.
"In our response to climate change, the reduction of HFCs is low-hanging fruit," said Tucker. "We will make a significant impact at a comparatively low cost with these HFC reductions."
LD 226, An Act To Limit the Use of Hydrofluorocarbons To Fight Climate Change, would prohibit the sale of new products containing HFCs. Existing products in use would be grandfathered. Tucker sponsored the bill at the request of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.
Tucker, who represents part of Brunswick, is serving his fourth term in the Maine House of Representatives. He serves as House chair of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee.
