AUGUSTA - The Legislature's Transportation Committee voted unanimously of those present on Thursday to advance an amended version of LD 522, An Act to Require That Motor Vehicles Be Clear of Snow When Operated on Public Ways. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Bruce White, D-Waterville.
As amended, the bill would require motorists of a passenger vehicle to take measures to prevent snow or ice from falling from their vehicles while operating on Maine roadways. Drivers in violation would face a fine of no more than $50 for a first-time offense, while subsequent offenses would be subject to a fine between $150 and $250. Under a separate provision, the bill would also require larger vehicles and trucks to clear off snow and ice.
"This bill will enhance public safety by addressing issues of falling snow and ice from vehicles before entering the roads," said White. "I am thankful for the Transportation Committee's work on this bill and look forward to working with my colleagues in the House and Senate in the near future to get this bill to the Governor's desk."
The bill will move to the full Legislature for consideration in the coming weeks.
White, a member of both the Transportation Committee and the Innovation, Development, Economic Advancement and Business Committee, is serving his third term in the Maine House. He represents part of Waterville.
