Terry introduces bill to support veterans relocating to Maine

AUGUSTA - House Majority Leader Mo Terry, D-Gorham, introduced LD 265, An Act to Provide Support Services for Military Members Transitioning to Civilian Life in Maine, before the Joint Standing Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs on Monday.

The bill would help fund organizations actively recruiting retiring military members and their families to Maine, and offering support as they transition to civilian life.

"Maine is facing a severe workforce shortage, even while people continue to move here," said Rep. Terry. "The work of matching qualified job seekers with open positions is critical to a strong economy. That's why I am so pleased to introduce legislation that will fund continuing efforts to find, attract, train and help connect retiring military service members with the employers that need them most."

"Unlike many other states that have substantial recruiting networks either through the state or via private companies, Maine does not have a formal recruiting structure. This legislation will help provide a pipeline of talent to Maine employers, boosting Maines workforce and establishing Maine as a destination for some of the thousands of transitioning active duty military members and their families," she added.

The Legislature's Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee will hold a work session on the bill in the coming weeks.

Terry, who represents part of Gorham, is serving her fourth term in the Maine House and serves as the House Majority Leader. She is a chef and small business owner with more than 25 years of experience in the food service industry.
