Tepler bill to improve health outcomes in the state signed into law

AUGUSTA - A measure to improve health outcomes in the state sponsored by Rep. Denise Tepler, D-Topsham, was signed into law last week by Gov. Janet Mills.

LD 274 directs the Maine Health Data Organization (MHDO) to develop a methodology to collect and analyze data on health care disparities within Maine's racial and ethnic populations. The MHDO will report back their recommendations to the Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Affairs Committee later this year.

The COVID-19 pandemic illustrated how stark racial and ethnic disparities in health care can be, especially in Maine. As of May 27, the rate of infection was 18 times higher for Black Mainers than white Mainers, and nearly twice as high for Asian and Pacific Islander Mainers. The rate of Latinx Mainers was 2.7 times as high as the rate for non-Hispanic Mainers.

"Transparency in health care is important," said Tepler. "The data collected by the MHDO will help us to better understand how the current systems in place directly impact the health of all Maine citizens and will help guide us to better and more equitable practices."

The bill will go into effect 90 days after the Legislature adjourns this week.

Tepler is serving her fourth term in the Maine House and represents all of the town of Topsham. She serves as the House chair of the Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Affairs Committee.
