AUGUSTA – Today, Rep. Mana Abdi (D-Lewiston), issued a statement in response to the speculation that federal law enforcement could be conducting operations in Maine in the coming days, including in Lewiston.
Statement from Rep. Abdi:
“I have been hearing from many Lewiston residents who are feeling anxious after learning about potential increased federal immigration enforcement activity in Maine. I want to share what I know, be clear about what I don’t, and make sure people have accurate information.
There are reports that federal immigration authorities are active in Maine. At this time, however, specific details about enforcement actions, locations, or timing have not been publicly confirmed. I understand that this uncertainty is stressful, especially for immigrant and refugee families in our community.
What is important for people to know right now is that everyone has rights. No one is required to open their door without a warrant signed by a judge, and the Lewiston Police Department does not enforce federal immigration law. I know some people are afraid to go to work, send their children to school, or seek medical care, but I want to encourage folks to continue with their daily lives as they have for decades. Maine is our home.
I also want to be clear about expectations. Federal agencies may be here to do a job, but how that job is done matters. Enforcement should never involve unnecessary force, destruction of property, or treatment that strips people of dignity. Residents deserve to be spoken to honestly and respectfully, and due process must be upheld at every step. Any action that undermines trust, ignores basic rights, or harms community well-being is unacceptable.
As a state representative who works on public safety issues, I am staying in contact with local officials and trusted community and legal partners to ensure people have accurate information and that our community is protected. I will continue to share verified updates as they become available.
Lewiston is a city where people look out for one another. In moments like this, clear information and care for our neighbors matter. It is more important than ever that we do not give into chaos, but instead move forward with purpose and intention.”
Abdi represents House District 95, which includes part of Lewiston.
