Sayre named House chair of the Legislature’s Taxation Committee

AUGUSTA – Rep. Dan Sayre, D-Kennebunk, has been appointed to serve as House chair of the Legislature’s Taxation Committee by Speaker Ryan Fecteau, D-Biddeford. Having served in Maine’s House of Representatives for three years, he takes over for Rep. Kristen Cloutier, who resigned from the House effective Oct. 31.

The committee oversees the Bureau of Revenue Services and the State Board of Property Tax Review, as well as measures related to taxpayer relief programs, property valuation and assessment, and municipal revenue sharing.

"I’m excited to take on this new role and resume work with my Taxation Committee colleagues,” said Sayre. “Together, we continue to build on the progress made last session in reforming our property and income tax systems, strengthening incentives to spur housing and job growth and relieving cost-of-living pressures."

He takes on the role of chair during a period of economic tension throughout the country. Late last month, the Taxation Committee met to hear Gov. Janet Mills’ proposed plan to conform to some of the changes in the federal tax code outlined in Trump’s federal budget.

“Representative Sayre will ably lead the Taxation Committee in the second session," said Speaker Ryan Fecteau. "I am confident that his thoughtful, considered approach to policymaking will allow the committee to build upon its strong work on behalf of Maine people."

Sayre is serving his second term in the Maine Legislature and represents House District 135, which includes part of Kennebunk.
