AUGUSTA - Rep. Dan Sayre, D-Kennebunk, introduced a bill Wednesday before the Legislature's Health and Human Services Committee that would provide funding for a diabetes education program in York County.
LD 469 would allocate funding in fiscal years 2023-24 and 2024-25 for the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention to contract with an organization in York County to carry out an approved diabetes education program. The program would provide individuals with skills and advice on how to manage the disease.
"Roughly 10% of our adult population has been diagnosed with diabetes," said Sayre. "This program will help to educate our York County population on how to manage this disease in a healthy way and to look out for warning signs. Education is essential to the self-management of diabetes, which is the key to living well with the disease and avoiding costly and serious complications."
The Legislature's Health and Human Services Committee will hold a work session on the bill in the coming weeks.
Sayre is serving his first term in the Maine Legislature and represents House District 135, which includes part of Kennebunk. He serves on the Legislature's Innovation, Development, Economic Advancement and Business Committee.
