Roeder vacation pay bill signed into law

AUGUSTA - Gov. Janet Mills recently signed into law LD 225, a bill that requires employees to receive their accrued vacation pay upon cessation of their employment, sponsored by Rep. Amy Roeder, D-Bangor.

The law, which will go into effect 90 days after the current session of the 130th Legislature adjourns, requires employers to pay employees unused accrued vacation time upon the cessation of their employment or no later than their next payday, beginning on January 1, 2023. Employers with 10 or fewer employees and public employers, which include municipal, county and state employers, in addition to the University of Maine System and the Maine Community College System, would not be subject to this new law.

"I am incredibly proud of the work my colleagues and I have done to push this commonsense legislation forward," said Roeder. "Workers earn their vacation compensation, and as such, should be paid for it in full."

Roeder is serving in her first term and represents a portion of Bangor in the Maine House. She is a member of the Legislature's Labor and Housing Committee.
