Roeder bills to protect workers advance in Senate

AUGUSTA - Today, LD 936 and LD 949, both sponsored by Rep. Amy Roeder, D-Bangor, have advanced in the Senate.

LD 936 received initial approval. This legislation would require an employer with 10 or more employees to include pay ranges on job postings. Employers with fewer than 10 employees must disclose, on request, the salary range that will be offered to a successful applicant.

LD 949 was enacted. This legislation prohibits an employer from using audiovisual monitoring in an employee's residence, personal vehicle or property and allows employees to decline a request by an employer to install data collection or transmission applications on their personal electronic devices. It also requires that an employer notify a prospective employee during the interview process about any surveillance practices and notify current employees in advance if they wish to use surveillance technology.

"Both LD 936 and LD 949 will increase protections for employees while helping employers attract prospective workers," said Roeder. "Sharing pay ranges with prospective employees, having transparent salary conversations with current employees and limiting monitoring in the workplace helps build trust and ensures that everyone feels valued and respected."

Both bills face further votes in the coming days.

Roeder is serving her second term in the Maine House of Representatives and is House chair of the Labor and Housing Committee. She represents House District 23, which includes a portion of Bangor.
