Roeder bill package to support Maine workers passes Labor Committee

AUGUSTA – Three bills to help support Maine workers, introduced by Rep. Amy Roeder, D-Bangor, were passed Tuesday in the Maine

Rep. Roeder

Legislature’s Labor Committee. The bills would require employers to disclose pay ranges, allow employees to request flexible work schedules without retaliation and better regulate employer surveillance.

“The initial passage of these three workers’ rights bills gets us closer to creating pay equity, better communication regarding flexible work schedules and more transparency around job surveillance,” said Roeder, House chair of the Labor Committee. “These bills offer us tools for today’s modern workplace, that will enable Maine businesses to remain more competitive in their industries.”

The bills, which were approved by the House and Senate during the 131st Legislature but died upon adjournment without receiving funding, will come before the Maine House in the coming weeks.

LD 54 would require an employer with 10 or more employees to include a pay range in their job postings. Employers with fewer than 10 employees would only have to disclose a salary range if requested by the applicant. Additionally, employers would have to disclose the pay range for an open position to current employees holding the same position, if asked.

LD 60 would allow an employee to submit a written request for a flexible work schedule for consideration by their employer, without the employer retaliating against them.

LD 61 would allow an employer to use surveillance technology only if they notify employees before its use. This bill would prohibit an employer from using audiovisual monitoring in an employee's residence, personal vehicle or on the employee's property. Additionally, the bill would allow an employee to decline data collection or transmission application use on their personal electronic devices.

Roeder is serving her third term in the Maine House of Representatives and is House chair of the Labor Committee. She represents House District 23, which includes a portion of Bangor.
