AUGUSTA - Rep. Morgan Rielly, D-Westbrook, received the 2021 State Leadership Award presented by America's Service Commissions (ASC) Tuesday in recognition of his commitment to public service and volunteerism.
ASC, a nonprofit and nonpartisan association, represents 52 state service commissions across the country and supports the expansion of service programming. Each year, ASC celebrates the achievements of leaders focused on building community through public service. Past recipients of the State Service Leadership Award include 2020 Democratic presidential candidates Gov. Jay Inslee and Sen. John Hickenlooper.
"I am honored to accept this award," said Rielly. "I know that my generation is ready to serve. We are ready to meet this moment and this decade."
Rielly championed two pieces of legislation earlier this year focused on expanding service opportunities across the state. LD 722, a bill to establish the Maine Climate Corps, and LD 1010, a bipartisan bill to establish the Maine Service Fellows Program, were both signed into law and will go into effect on October 18.
"The call to serve and to provide others with opportunities to serve defines my work as a legislator," said Rielly. "The challenges our state faces can be overwhelming. From working to mitigate the impacts of the climate crisis to addressing public health needs, as we have seen with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Maine Climate Corps and Maine Service Fellows Program will offer our community members a chance to make a difference, serve others and help create a better future for all of us."
Rielly is serving his first term in the Maine House of Representatives as a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs. He represents a portion of Westbrook.
