AUGUSTA - Following tonight's State of the State address, during which Gov. Janet Mills outlined her priorities for gun safety legislation this session, House Majority Leader Mo Terry, D-Gorham, and Assistant Majority Leader Kristen Cloutier, D-Lewiston, released the following statements:
House Majority Leader Mo Terry:
"The gun safety policy initiatives outlined by the governor during her State of the State address mark an important step forward. In the House, we have been consistent in leading the effort to enact meaningful gun safety reform for years, and we are pleased that the governor is showing a willingness to address this issue head-on. Her proposal provides a strong starting point for our conversations about how to move forward and ensure that tragedies like the ones that occurred in Lewiston and Bowdoin last year never happen again in our state. But while tonight offers a promising start, we know there are more policies to consider, like waiting periods and limiting magazine capacity. We remain committed to advocating for strong gun safety measures and will continue to fight for policies that will help keep all Maine communities safe."
Assistant Majority Leader Kristen Cloutier:
"Tonight, I am encouraged by the gun safety proposals outlined by the governor, including strengthening our Extreme Risk Protection Order law and closing the current background check loophole, which will be critical in preventing future gun violence by keeping firearms out of the hands of people who should not have them. I am also grateful for the governor's proposal to open a new crisis receiving center in Lewiston, as well as to invest $5 million into a new fund that will provide ongoing support for the victims and families of the October tragedy. Often, the effects of gun-related trauma arent fully felt until years after the tragedy takes place and our actions and behavioral health investments as a state must reflect that. This funding will help ensure a continuum of care for victims well into the future as our community continues to heal."
