AUGUSTA – Following tonight’s State of the State Address by Governor Janet Mills, House Majority Leader Matt Moonen, D-Portland, and Assistant House Majority Leader Lori K. Gramlich, D-Old Orchard Beach, released the following statements:
House Majority Leader Matt Moonen:
“When Governor Mills first took office in 2019, she inherited the failures of Paul LePage’s disastrous eight years in office. In partnership with the Legislature, she has worked tirelessly to rebuild our state and fix the problems that he left behind. We have worked together to make meaningful progress by expanding access to health care, funding public education, and investing in working families. In times of crisis, she has provided the steady leadership our state needed.
As Maine’s first woman governor, she has also stood firm in protecting access to reproductive health care – and the tantrum thrown by the Republican men who left her speech early tonight won’t change that. I am grateful for everything she has done for Maine, and I look forward to what we can accomplish this session.”
Assistant Majority Leader Lori K. Gramlich:
“Throughout my seven years in the Legislature, we have made important progress to move Maine forward on so many critical issues, from strengthening Maine’s broken behavioral health care system to better preparing our communities for the impacts of climate change. Governor Mills has also led our state in protecting access to abortion care and other essential health care in the face of unprecedented attacks, unfazed by the likes of the Republican men who would rather throw a hissy fit than listen to a strong woman leader talk about abortion rights.
But as she outlined tonight, our state still faces significant challenges – and our work is far from done. House Democrats remain focused this session on lowering costs and ensuring that every Mainer has access to affordable health care, that every family has a safe and warm place to call home, and that no one goes hungry. These are the building blocks of stronger communities and a stronger Maine.”
