Reps. Kuhn, Murphy named 2025 Library Advocates of the Year

AUGUSTA – Rep. Amy Kuhn, D-Falmouth, and Rep. Kelly Murphy, D-Scarborough, have been recognized by the Maine Library Association as its 2025 Library Advocates of the Year for their respective work in uplifting libraries and librarians across the state.

The recognition comes as libraries in Maine and across the country have been under attack in recent months. In March, President Trump issued an executive order to dismantle the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the only federal agency that provides funding to libraries. In the following weeks, libraries faced financial uncertainty, with many unable to access funds from the IMLS. While some funding has been restored after a ruling from a federal judge, Maine libraries remain cautious.

“Libraries are the bedrocks of our communities,” said Reps. Kuhn and Murphy in a joint statement. “With the senseless funding cuts coming down from Washington, it is more important than ever that we protect these institutions of education and community. We are honored to receive this award, and will continue our work to advocate for our libraries, their employees and the people they serve across Maine.”

This year, both Kuhn and Murphy have introduced measures championing libraries and their community contributions. Rep. Kuhn introduced a resolution that honors National Library Week, a period of time in April designated towards celebrating the roles that libraries and librarians play in their communities. Rep. Murphy sponsored legislation to create a working group tasked with assessing the state of school and public libraries across Maine and identifying areas where improvements can be made.

The award was presented by Maine Library Association’s incoming legislative chair, Michelle Conners, at the organization’s annual conference held in Newry, Maine. The MLA has promoted and advocated for library interests since 1891.

Representative Kuhn is serving her second term in the Maine House and represents part of Falmouth. She is the House chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Judiciary.

Representative Murphy is serving her second term in the Maine Legislature and is House chair of the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee. She represents District 125, which includes part of Scarborough.
