Reps. Berry and Hepler: You may be missing money Treasurer Beck announces $13.9 million in new unclaimed property

AUGUSTA - Reps. Seth Berry, D-Bowdoinham, and Allison Hepler, D-Woolwich, urge Maine residents to check the state database for unclaimed property.

Maine State Treasurer Henry Beck says the state is holding more than $275 million of unclaimed property after adding over $13.9 million this year alone, including over 85,000 individual pieces of unclaimed property.

"Many people are unaware they have unclaimed property," said Hepler. "We want to make sure this property is returned to its rightful owners, so take a moment to see if you, a family member or your business is on the list."

Every year, the Office of the State Treasurer releases its annual list of unclaimed property, which consists of money and other personal assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located.

"These funds could be from stock dividends, bank accounts or overpaid bills," said Berry. "No matter how long it's been missing, its still your money, so please check the list."

There is no fee to process an unclaimed property claim. Unclaimed property does not include real estate, animals or vehicles.

Residents may go online to search for unclaimed property at the Office of the Maine State Treasurer's website.
