Rep. McCrea: You may be missing money

AUGUSTA - Rep. David McCrea, D-Fort Fairfield, is urging all Maine residents to check the state database for unclaimed property.

Every year, the Office of the State Treasurer releases its annual list of unclaimed property, which consists of money and other personal assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located.

Maine State Treasurer Henry Beck says the state is holding more than $291 million in unclaimed property after adding over $16 million this year alone. In total, the State of Maine is holding over 905,000 unclaimed property listings.

"Most people do not know they have unclaimed property," said McCrea. "I want to see people's hard-earned money returned to them, so please take a moment to see if you, a family member or your business is on the list. If you have any trouble navigating this process, please reach out to me for assistance."

There is no fee to process an unclaimed property claim. Unclaimed property does not include real estate, animals or vehicles.

Residents may go online to search for unclaimed property at the Office of the Maine State Treasurer's website.

McCrea is serving his third term in the Legislature and is a member of the Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee and the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee. He represents Caswell, Easton, Fort Fairfield, Hamlin, Limestone, part of Presque Isle, Stockholm and Cyr Plantation, plus the unorganized territory of Connor Township.
