AUGUSTA - Rep. Allison Hepler, D-Woolwich, is urging all Maine residents to check the state database for unclaimed property.
Maine State Treasurer Henry Beck says the state is holding more than $291 million of unclaimed property after adding over $16 million this year alone. In total, the State of Maine is holding over 905,000 unclaimed property listings.
"Most people do not know they have unclaimed property," said Hepler. "I want to see people's hard-earned money returned to them, so please take a moment to see if you, a family member or your business is on the list. If you have any trouble navigating this process, please feel welcome to reach out to me for assistance."
Every year, the Office of the State Treasurer releases its annual list of unclaimed property, which consists of money and other personal assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located.
There is no fee to process an unclaimed property claim. Unclaimed property does not include real estate, animals or vehicles.
Residents may go online to search for unclaimed property at the Office of the Maine State Treasurer's website.
Hepler is serving her second term in the Maine House and sits on both the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee and the Marine Resources Committee. She represents the towns of Arrowsic, Dresden, Georgetown, Phippsburg, Woolwich and part of Richmond.
