AUGUSTA - Rep. Richard Evans, D-Dover-Foxcroft, is urging all Maine residents to check the state database for unclaimed property.
Maine State Treasurer Henry Beck says the state is holding more than $290 million of unclaimed property after adding over $16 million this year alone. In total, the State of Maine is holding over 905,000 unclaimed property listings.
"Many Mainers are unfamiliar with the state's unclaimed property program, so they may not know to check the list," said Evans. I want to see peoples hard-earned money returned to them, so I am reminding constituents to take a moment to search the list. You may find property that belongs to you, a loved one or your business. Every year, the Office of the State Treasurer releases its annual list of unclaimed property, which consists of money and other personal assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located.
There is no fee to process an unclaimed property claim. Unclaimed property does not include real estate, animals or vehicles.
Residents may go online to search for unclaimed property at the Office of the Maine State Treasurers website.
