AUGUSTA – On May 1, the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future announced that Monhegan Island has been selected as a recipient of a Community Action Grant award from the Community Resilience Partnership.
Monhegan will receive an award of $75,000 that will be used to make resiliency upgrades to the breakwater protecting Fish Beach.
Rep. Lydia Crafts, D-Newcastle, released the following statement applauding the funding:
“The January storms last year overwhelmed Fish Beach's small breakwater — the community's only mooring access. Upgrading the breakwater would help buffer powerful storms and create a safer harbor for the Monhegan Boat Line, the island's sole year-round mail carrier. Currently, the twice-weekly winter ferries face frequent cancellations due to wave conditions, not just in open water but within our harbor itself.”
This award is part of $8 million in this round of grant funding to help Maine communities protect people, businesses and infrastructure from flooding, storm surge and other climate effects. The funding, which was approved by the Legislature in the May 2024 supplemental budget, will support projects in 166 communities throughout the state.
The full list of projects can be found here.
Rep. Crafts is serving her third term in the Maine House and represents Bristol, Damariscotta, Newcastle, Nobleboro and Monhegan Plantation. She serves as House chair of the Legislature’s Transportation Committee.
