AUGUSTA - Rep. Seth Berry, D-Bowdoinham, is urging all Maine residents to check the state database for unclaimed property.
Maine State Treasurer Henry Beck says the state is holding more than $291 million of unclaimed property after adding over $16 million this year alone. In total, the State of Maine is holding over 905,000 unclaimed property listings.
"Most Mainers are unaware of unclaimed property," said Berry. "My hope is to get the word out so that people and businesses here in Sagadahoc County can get their hard-earned money returned to them. I am happy to help anyone navigate this process, so I encourage those having trouble to reach out to me for assistance."
Every year, the Office of the State Treasurer releases its annual list of unclaimed property, which consists of money and other personal assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located.
There is no fee to process an unclaimed property claim. Unclaimed property does not include real estate, animals or vehicles.
Residents may go online to search for unclaimed property at the Office of the Maine State Treasurer's website.
Berry represents House District 55, which includes Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Swan Island and most of Richmond. He previously served from 2006 to 2014, the final two years as House majority leader, and returned to the House in 2016.
