Perry bill to allow for indoor entry areas within retail marijuana stores signed into law

AUGUSTA - A measure to allow for controlled, indoor entry areas inside marijuana retail stores, sponsored by Rep. Joe Perry, D-Bangor, was signed into law Monday by Gov. Janet Mills.

"The bill provides a commonsense approach that allows marijuana businesses to have a controlled space directly inside their store where the identification of a purchaser can be verified while awaiting entry," said Perry. "Customers will no longer need to wait on sidewalks and in parking lots during severe weather, and businesses are able to maintain their safety and security."

Under LD 1434, a controlled, indoor entry area, which must be physically separated from the sales area of a marijuana retail store, can act as a waiting area for individuals seeking shelter from harsh weather conditions. The measure maintains that a person under 21 years of age may not enter the premises of a marijuana establishment, except while having their age verified in the store's indoor entry area.

Perry, who serves on the Legislature's Joint Standing Committee on Taxation, is serving his sixth non-consecutive term in the Maine House of Representatives. He serves House District 124, which includes a portion of Bangor and a portion of Orono.
