Montell introduces bill to require defensive driving course completion for certain traffic infractions

AUGUSTA - Rep. Karen Montell, D-Gardiner, introduced legislation this week that would require the completion of a defensive driving course for certain traffic infractions.

LD 1374 would require a course completion for infractions such as texting while driving, using handheld devices while driving and driving to endanger, for example. The bill would also allow drivers to reduce the amount of demerit points against them through the completion of this course in certain circumstances.

"This bill seeks to make our roadways safer by utilizing the tool of a defensive driving course," said Montell. "The safety of all Mainers is paramount, and we need to do more to ensure responsible driving on our roads. This legislation will help more people understand the dangers that come with reckless behavior behind the wheel".

Highway deaths reached a 15-year high in 2022, with the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety reporting 177 fatalities.

The Legislature's Transportation Committee will hold a work session on the bill in the coming weeks.

Montell is serving her first term in the Maine House and represents House District 54, which includes Gardiner and Farmingdale. She serves on the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee.
