Mills signs Rielly's bill to prevent sexual trauma among Maine National Guard into law

AUGUSTA - LD 625, a bill to prevent and address sexual trauma among Maine National Guard service members, sponsored by Rep. Morgan Rielly, D-Westbrook, was signed into law Tuesday by Gov. Janet Mills.

The law calls for a review of past recommendations to address and prevent sexual trauma, as well as an updated report, which will be reviewed by the Legislature's Joint Standing Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs. The report will outline recommendations to the committee for their consideration.

"I commend the Maine National Guard Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program for their work in reducing and addressing sexual trauma," said Rielly. "The National Guard has made their commitment to eliminating incidents of sexual assault and trauma through awareness and prevention training clear. However, continued examination of existing services is necessary to ensure the safety of those who devote their lives to serve our state and our nation."

Rielly is serving his first term in the Maine House of Representatives as a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs. He represents a portion of Westbrook.
