Milliken earns 2024 Visionary Voice Award

AUGUSTA - Rep. Nina Milliken, D-Blue Hill, earned the National Sexual Violence Resource Center's (NSVRC) 2024 Visionary Voice Award. The Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault presented Milliken with the award at a ceremony on April 30 at the University of Maine at Augusta.

The Visionary Voice Awards are presented annually by the NSVRC, the leading nonprofit in providing information and tools to prevent and respond to sexual violence. The award is presented in conjunction with Sexual Assault Awareness Month to individuals from across the country for their outstanding work toward preventing sexual abuse, assault and harassment.

"It is an honor to be recognized by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center for my legislative work," said Milliken. "I look forward to continuing to build on partnerships with organizations who are giving victims the voice they deserve and making further progress for survivors in Maine."

Milliken was recognized for championing legislation to make Maine the second state to create legal remedies for victims of non-consensual removal of or tampering with a condom, known as "stealthing."

The measure provides stealthing victims with a civil recourse to hold their perpetrator accountable by allowing them to file a lawsuit within a six-year statute of limitations. The legislation also creates rules and standards for courts to consider regarding custody and support should a child be conceived as a result of stealthing.

Milliken, a member of the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee, is serving her first term in the Maine House and represents Blue Hill, Brooksville, Castine, Sedgwick, Surry and Trenton.
