McCrea bill to establish no-knock warrant policies for Maine law enforcement agencies signed into law

AUGUSTA - A measure to require law enforcement agencies to adopt policies regarding the execution of unannounced search warrants, LD 1043, sponsored by Rep. David McCrea, D-Fort Fairfield, was signed into law this week by Gov. Janet Mills.

"After the tragic death of Breonna Taylor and so many other unarmed Black Americans, local law enforcement agencies have begun taking a critical look at how to improve training and policing policies to limit these types of nonsensical deaths," said McCrea. "This bill provides a thoughtful and collaborative approach to establishing standards to help keep all Mainers safe. I am so pleased to have had the assistance and support of both the Maine Chiefs of Police Association and Maine Attorney General Frey".

The measure directs law enforcement agencies to adopt written policies as well as an enforcement mechanism regarding the use of no-knock warrants. These policies must meet the minimum standards adopted by the Board of Trustees of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.

McCrea is serving his third term in the Legislature and is a member of the Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee and the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee. He represents Caswell, Easton, Fort Fairfield, Hamlin, Limestone, part of Presque Isle, Stockholm and Cyr Plantation, plus the unorganized territory of Connor Township.
