Malon introduces measure to help more families create energy-efficient homes

AUGUSTA – On Wednesday, Rep. Marc Malon, D-Biddeford, presented a measure before the Joint Standing Committee on Housing and Economic Development to create a formalized weatherization readiness program for income-eligible families.

Rep. Marc Malon

The measure builds off Malon’s work in the 131st Legislature. He sponsored a bill that created a working group to design a weatherization and home repairs program for low-income Mainers so that residents’ homes would meet the eligibility requirements for home energy assistance programs. LD 996 was drafted based on the recommendations of that working group and would create a fund to assist Mainers living on low- and fixed-incomes in weatherizing their homes.

“An energy-efficient home should be accessible to all Mainers, not just those who are wealthy enough to keep up with home repairs,” said Malon. “This measure will formalize weatherization readiness for all residents, no matter their income, which will in turn reduce deferred maintenance, allowing folks to fix up their homes quicker and reduce their energy use and costs.”

The Legislature’s Housing and Economic Development Committee will hold a work session for this bill in the coming weeks.

Rep. Malon is serving his second term in Maine’s House of Representatives and represents a portion of Biddeford. He serves on the Housing and Economic Development Committee and the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee.
