Local legislators earn highest score for supporting state employees

AUGUSTA - Reps. Jan Dodge, D-Belfast, Scott Cuddy, D-Winterport and Paige Zeigler, D-Montville, each received a 100% rating on votes to support state workers, according to a recent scorecard released by the Maine State Employees Association, Local 1989 of the Service Employees International Union (MSEA-SEIU).

"Being a union member has allowed me to make a good life for myself and my family while working in the trades," said Cuddy. "But more importantly, it's instilled in me a sense of commitment to community. That commitment has guided every vote I've taken in the Legislature, including to protect workers' rights, good working conditions, fair wages and the ability to collectively bargain. I am honored to receive this recognition and look forward to continuing my advocacy on behalf of working Mainers this session."

"I was proud to stand up for workers, fair wages and good working conditions this session," said Dodge. "Supporting our state workers supports a strong economy, something we all want here in Maine!"

"I'm proud of the votes I took in support of our state employees and educators," said Zeigler. "For all they do to keep essential services going and educate the next generation, especially in light of their efforts over the course of the pandemic, they have my most sincere thanks."

The member-run union group scored legislator's votes on key bills related to state workers from the first session of the 130th Legislature, including the Back-to-Basics Budget, funding collective bargaining agreements with executive branch employees, binding arbitration and the two-year state budget.

Dodge is serving her second term in the Maine House and serves on the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee. She represents the towns of Belfast, Northport and Waldo.

Cuddy, a member of the Labor and Housing Committee, is serving his second term in the Maine House of Representatives. He represents House District 98, which includes Frankfort, Searsport, Swanville and Winterport.

Zeigler is serving his third term in the Maine House and represents the communities of Belmont, Liberty, Lincolnville, Montville, Morrill, Palermo and Searsmont. He serves on the Environment and Natural Resources Committee and the Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee.
