Legislature enacts bill to clarify rulemaking parameters for the Office of Marijuana Policy

AUGUSTA - The Maine Legislature unanimously voted to enact a bill on Wednesday sponsored by Rep. Lynne Williams, D-Bar Harbor, that would clarify new rulemaking parameters for the Office of Marijuana Policy (OMP).

As amended, LD 1928 would implement changes to make the Maine Medical Use of Marijuana Act clearer and more specific, reducing the need for interpretation in rulemaking and protecting against administrative overreach. This includes added protections for Maine's medical marijuana patients, their caregivers and small, locally owned businesses.

"Prior to serving in the Legislature, I spent more than a decade as an attorney representing Maine patients and caregivers," said Williams. "Through that experience, I know how important it is to implement these protections. This legislation will be critical to ensuring the well-being of the entire medical marijuana industry in our state."

The bill now heads to the governor's desk.

Williams, a member of the Legislature's Transportation Committee, is serving her first term in the Maine House and represents Bar Harbor, Lamoine and Mount Desert.
