AUGUSTA - The Legislature gave initial approval earlier this week to a measure sponsored by Rep. Marc Malon, D-Biddeford, on behalf of the Department of Public Safety, that would create a universal exclusionary list for all forms of gambling to which those struggling with gambling addiction could voluntarily add their names.
With mobile and online wagering becoming legal in Nov. 2023, the increased accessibility of sports betting has caused advocates to worry about its impact on the health and wellness of those who are currently struggling with or in recovery from gambling addiction.
Currently, Maine has several voluntary exclusion lists that allow residents to self-submit their names for certain forms of legal gambling. LD 2080 would create a consolidated, universal exclusionary list to streamline the process for individuals wishing to add their names.
"As Maine has expanded its legal gambling services, we must ensure that we shore up protections and support systems for those in the recovery community," said Malon. "Establishing a universal list is vital for individuals grappling with gambling addiction, offering vital support for those seeking to add their names to it and avoid relapse."
The measure will face further votes in the House and Senate in the coming days.
Rep. Marc Malon is serving his first term in the Maine House, representing a portion of Biddeford. He serves as a member of the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee and the Labor and Housing Committee.
